More than 620,000 Barbie-related user-generated playlists have been created on Spotify, including popular songs such as “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, “Barbie Tingz” by Nicki Minaj, and “California Gurls” by Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg.
The highly anticipated world premiere of the Barbie film, directed by Little Women writer-director Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as the most iconic doll in the world, has arrived. To commemorate Barbie’s enormous cultural impact, Spotify has added a touch of pink, beginning with an updated Barbie Official Playlist and a special Barbie-pink play bar.
Featuring an all-star cast that includes Ryan Gosling as “Ken,” as well as appearances by America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, and Kate McKinnon, each new trailer or segment that has been released since the first few images were released a year ago has heightened anticipation for the film. Pink clothing sales have increased, food purveyors are introducing Barbie-themed menu items, and a pink Malibu DreamHouse has been constructed.
More than 620,000 user-generated Barbie-related playlists have been created on Spotify in anticipation of the impending premiere. Playlist creation increased by nearly 270% on May 26 following the publication of the Barbie movie trailer and has continued to rise in the weeks since. “California Gurls” by Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg, “Barbie Tingz” by Nicki Minaj, “Toxic” and “Oops!…I Did It Again” by Britney Spears, “Wannabe” by Spice Girls, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper, and, of course, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua are among the most frequently added songs to these playlists.
The newly revised Barbie Official Playlist features new music from Atlantic Records in honor of all the Barbies, Kens, and Allans. For instance, Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night,” Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World (with Aqua)” make the list. The compilation will also include Spotify Canvas on select tracks, which provides fans with an immersive experience via film footage. Composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, the score for the film will be published on August 4 and featured on the official playlist.
Listeners will also discover a Living in a Barbie World destination that includes the Barbie Official Playlist and other playlists to get you ready for your Barbie summer, such as Summer Pop and our new Hot Pink playlist, which will give listeners a personalized Barbie-inspired atmosphere.
