Stan Lee: Documentary Brings Marvel Fans Back To Comic Legend’s Roots
Marvel pays a fitting tribute to the late comic book creator in the documentary “Stan Lee. The comic book legend who brought to life your favorite comic book characters, including Iron Man, Black Panther, and many others reveals his life story.
The entire documentary is voiced by the comic book legend, focusing on his entire career and personal life. Born in New York City to Eastern European immigrants, the family endured some personal hardships through the Great Depression.
He enjoyed reading books such as Sherlock Holmes. It was revealed in the documentary that it was his uncle who referred him to publishing at Time Comics. He got to a text filler and eventually had a chance to write his own comic book stories. Initially, he saw no future in writing comics and decided to credit his stories under “Stan Lee” instead of his full name.
His comic book career was interrupted when he volunteered to fight in World War 2. But due to his experience in publishing, he was assigned to write training manuals. After the war, he returned to writing comic books as an editor. He was allowed to create his comic book character, and the “Fantastic Four” was born. He wanted his characters to have everyday lives and he even placed his characters in New York City instead of a fictional city like “Gotham City” in Batman by DC Comics.
Comic book fans will enjoy how their favorite comic book character was born and created. Spider-Man for example, was created because Stan Lee realized that were not many teenage comic book heroes. He wanted many of his heroes to have flaws as everyday people and his readers to be sympathetic to the villains. He wanted his readers to understand how the villains became villains.
His comics also spread drug awareness and created characters for women and minorities. Supergirl was created for the female audience and Black Panther is created for the African American readers. The documentary also talks about the relationship of Stan Lee with co-writers/artists Jack Kirby and Steve Dikto. Although they had a rocky relationship, the comic book legend still credits them as part of his success.
