LG Electronics Joins RE100 and Commits to Transition to Renewable Energy

LG Electronics has joined RE100 (Renewable Energy 100), a global initiative advocating that enterprises convert their electricity needs to 100 percent renewable energy. The company’s decision to join the RE100 is further evidence of its commitment to sustainability and fulfilling its global corporate citizen responsibilities.
The company plans to convert all its business locations to renewable energy by 2050. To achieve this objective, LG will progressively increase its electricity use from renewable sources such as solar and wind power to 60 percent by 2030, 90 percent by 2040, and 100 percent by 2050.
In addition to increasing the generation and utilization of renewable energy through the installation of high-efficiency solar panels at LG offices and manufacturing facilities, the company will implement several additional measures, such as acquiring renewable energy certificates (RECs), signing renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs), and, in South Korea, paying Korea Electric Power Corporation’s (KEPCO) green premium.
As part of its ongoing efforts in this area, LG signed a direct PPA with GS EPS, a Korean power generation company, to construct a solar power station on the roof of the existing integrated production building at LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea, by 2025. Several solar panels have been installed and generating electricity for select buildings since December. The company has installed solar panels on the rooftops of a number of its offices around the world, including the LG Sciencepark R&D complex in Seoul, South Korea; the North American Headquarters campus in New Jersey, United States; LG India’s office building in Greater Noida, India; and the Rayong home appliance factory in Thailand.
LG had already established plans to expedite its transition to renewable energy and accelerate its journey to carbon neutrality. In addition to reducing direct carbon emissions (scope 1), the company is reducing indirect carbon emissions (scope 2) by switching to renewable energy. LG proclaimed 2019 its Zero Carbon 2030 commitment to achieving net-zero (direct and indirect) carbon dioxide emissions (scopes 1 and 2) by 2030.
“Through ongoing efforts and innovation, LG is well on its way to achieving its goals of converting to 100 percent renewable energy and becoming a carbon-neutral business,” said LG Electronics’ chief strategy officer, Lee Sam-soo. “LG remains fully committed to achieving its ESG vision of improving the quality of life for all,”
