Netflix’s Upcoming Korean series ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ drops you in a World War II hospital full of monsters

Gyeongseong Creature, Netflix’s upcoming K-drama, combines beautiful historical drama and mystery for a period piece you won’t forget when it arrives in December.

The series is set in Gyeongseong, Korea, in early 1945, during the Japanese colonial period. It follows two young adults as they confront peculiar beings driven by avarice and are forced to fight for survival in the city, which is now referred to as Seoul. It turns out, however, that something beyond the organisms themselves might be even more perilous.

Written by Kang Eun-kyung (Dr. Romantic, Kang Chi, The Beginning), Gyeongseong Creature was directed by Chung Dong-yoon (Hot Stove League).

Jang Tae-sang, portrayed by Park Seo-jun (Itaewon Class, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim), is the most affluent individual in Gyeongseong and the proprietor of the largest pawn store in the city. Although he has a reputation for prioritising financial gain over justice, Tae-sang’s perspective alters when he meets Yoon Chae-ok during the course of investigating a series of missing person cases.

Gyeongseong Creature cast

Han So-hee (My Name, Nevertheless) portrays the renowned detective Yoon Chae-ok, who is capable of locating even deceased individuals who have gone missing. Chae-ok acquired her keen perception and dexterous survival abilities during her arduous youth, when she and her father traversed Manchuria and Shanghai.

Claudia Kim (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marco Polo, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Kim Hae-sook (Start-Up, Thieves), Cho Han-cheul (The Outlaws, Vicenzo), and Wi Ha-jun (Squid Game, Little Women) accompany them.

Part 1 debuts Dec. 22, while Part 2 will begin streaming Jan. 5, 2024
