Lay Zhang drops new single ‘Psychic’ following global success
Following the global success of “Run Back to You” with Lauv, Asian megastar Lay Zhang is set to enchant the music world once more with his latest single, “Psychic”. “Psychic” is the second lead single from his highly anticipated English album 2024, which is scheduled to make its debut this year and is distributed by Warner Music China.
With English, Chinese, and Korean translations of the track, this release demonstrates Lay’s dedication to an international audience and foreshadows the far-reaching journey that will ensue with this album endeavor. “Psychic” is an expression of Lay’s artistic development, having been produced in collaboration with Lay, Rykeyz, Sean Douglas, JHart, and Kyle Reynolds. Grammy-nominated producer Rykeyz, known for his work with Skip Marley, H.E.R., SAYGRACE, Demi Lovato, Chris Brown, and Bebe Rexha, served as the helm of production.
The song is a dynamic blend of R&B chordal motions, garage and bass rhythms, and great intensity, and it represents a major turning point in Lay’s international music career. Combining a wide range of musical elements, Rykeyz’s production prowess imparts a distinctive profundity to the track, resulting in an original and impactful sound that has been refined through collaborations with notable artists and artists from different genres. In its lyrics, “Psychic” ventures into the domain of predetermined and magical affiliations, investigating themes of profound comprehension and expectation that approach the supernatural.
Continuing his global music trip, fans are transported to Dubai, where the music video was shot, with an unusual mix of actors and crew from more than 20 countries. “Psychic” by Lay extends an invitation to viewers to embark on a voyage of artistic discovery and worldwide interconnection, promising a composition that not only demonstrates the artist’s multifariousness but also his capacity to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers.
The video is a visual odyssey in which Lay’s mesmerizing dance performance weaves through enchanted landscapes in search of a narrative that mirrors the song’s investigation of magical connections, while Dubai’s breathtaking and varied terrains perfectly complement the story. Captured over the course of two rigorous days, the video highlights various aspects of the city such as the Dubai desert, The Lost Chambers Aquarium (which features underwater immersive passages), Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (a significant heritage site), The Green Planet (Dubai’s personal tropical rainforest), and the Burj Khalifa and Atlantis, The Palm, where Lay performs a stunt and uses special effects to create falling scenes. Andrew Donoho, a director based in Los Angeles, is responsible for helming the music video.
Donoho has also collaborated with Twenty-One Pilots, Bella Poarch, will.i.am, Janelle Monáe, Paul McCartney, and numerous other artists. Recognized for his exceptional visual effects, ability to harmonize dance and cinematography, and “dreamlike” methodology, Donoho appeared to be the ideal candidate to materialize Lay’s vision.
