South Korean actress Park Min Young, known for her roles in popular K-dramas such as ‘Her Private Life,’ ‘What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim,’ and ‘Marry My Husband,’ made her first visit to the Philippines last weekend to finally meet her Filipino fans.

A day prior to the highly anticipated ‘My Brand New Day’ fan meeting event, Park Min Young graciously engaged with the local press and lucky fans at the Market! Market! Mall in Taguig for an exclusive press conference.

The 38-year-old actress is known for her versatility and charm on-screen, making her one of the most well-loved Korean actresses in the Philippines. Her arrival in Manila sparked excitement among avid followers of Korean entertainment, and although the venue for the presscon was limited, the malls’ activity center was packed until the top floor with excited fans, whom the actress fondly calls as her Filo MY Beans.

Highlights from the Press Conference

Park Min Young, also known in English as Rachel Park, surprised some of the audience that day by answering questions without an interpreter’s help. She shared well-thought-out insights into her craft and experiences in conversational English, charming her way into the hearts of the Filipinos.

Here are some of the questions and answers during her first Manila press conference:

The actress entertained questions from the press, displaying her humility and genuine connection with the crowd. When asked about her impressions of the Philippines and her future plans, Park Min Young expressed her eagerness to explore the country’s attractions and learn more about Filipino culture.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to (look through it), maybe you can recommend must-see places or your most favorite restaurant?”

When asked about her beauty regimen, the actress emphasized the importance of skincare and stress management, advocating for keeping the skin hydrated and maintaining a happy disposition.

“I have a kind of very sensitive skin, you know keep my skin moist, and then I put on a facial mask every day as well. And I try not to get too stressed but stay happy.”

Her warmth and sincerity shone through as she shared beauty tips and reflected on the success of her dramas, particularly ‘Marry My Husband,’ which garnered worldwide success. Park Min Young’s portrayal of strong, resilient female characters prompted discussions about empowerment and self-respect.

“It was truly amazing to witness the rating success, not only in Korea, but also in many different countries. I was very grateful for everything.”

Reflecting on her diverse roles, ranging from romantic comedies to emotionally challenging narratives, Park Min Young expressed a desire to explore physically demanding characters in future projects, showcasing her versatility as an actress.

“Come to think of it, I didn’t have many opportunities to portray a physically demanding character. So maybe it will be great if I have a chance to have a wild and raw action in the next project, to be completely different from my previous characters.”

When asked about her most memorable characters, Park Min Young cited Yoon-hee from ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal,’ Kim Mi-So from ‘What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim,’ and Jiwon from ‘Marry My Husband,’ highlighting the personal and professional growth she experienced through these roles.

“First is Yoon-hee from Sungkyunkwan Scandal, second one is Kim Mi-So from What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim. And last but not the least, Jiwon from Marry My Husband. I had a hard time playing this character, but it’s so meaningful to me coz they all motivated me to be better as an actor, and as a human being more so. So they are so memorable for me.”

The actress asked which character she resonates with the most in real life, Park Min Young humorously noted that she embodies a combination of various characters she’s portrayed over the years.

“In real life, what do you think? I think I’m kind of a combination of many characters I’ve played over 20 years. So I have some of them in me.”

In a lighthearted moment, Park Min Young expressed her choice of character to join the fan meeting, selecting Sung Deok-Mi from ‘Her Private Life’ for her enthusiastic fangirl persona.

“It will be, obviously, Sung Deok-Mi from Her Private Life, and she’s a true example of a fan girl. When it comes to fan meetings, I think she can be anything, from emcee to producer, you name it!”

Sharing insights into her craft, Park Min Young revealed her approach to script analysis and character development, emphasizing visualization as a key tool in understanding roles deeply.

“I’m not obsessed with memorizing all the lines, but rather I picture myself in the scene in my headfirst, including the location, camera movements, emotions, atmosphere and so on. Then the character development comes naturally. In this way I can physically and mentally (get) closer to my character I play profoundly.”

Addressing concerns about typecasting, Park Min Young encouraged aspiring artists to embrace their uniqueness and advised against worrying about being pigeonholed into one genre.

“I would say I am most comfortable with Romcom, cause you know I did a lot. But it doesn’t mean that it’s easy, it’s really hard to make the viewers fall in love and make them laugh at the same time. So and for the second question, if I have to give them advice it will be “Don’t worry” cause it means that they have the are unique and can represent the characters they play. So don’t worry.”

Looking towards the future, Park Min Young expressed optimism about upcoming milestones in her career, affirming her commitment to storytelling and character portrayal.

“The highlight of my acting career is yet to come, I think. So I still have a lot of stories to tell, roles to play, and messages to deliver. So I’m the kind of person that sees acting as just a significant part of my life, so I can separate myself from it. And I think I am at the perfect age for a wide range of roles. So for example in my last drama I could be a high school girl, a university freshman, and get married and divorced. And even fell in love with a charming prince. So I think the best part of my acting career is not here yet. You should be looking forward to it!”

Concluding the press conference, Park Min Young extended heartfelt gratitude to her Filipino fans, expressing regret for the delay in visiting the Philippines and promising an unforgettable experience at the fan meeting.

“I’ve always wanted to come here to the Philippines, for you guys, but I’m a little too late. So I’m really sorry about that. But now I’m here, and I really wanted to say, thank you so much for your love and support always. Let’s have a blast tomorrow at the fan meeting everyone! And I love you guys!”

Park Min Young held her first Manila fan meet “My Brand New Day in Manila” last May 12 at the SM North EDSA SkyDome, where she delighted her Filipino fans with performances, games, and heartwarming interactions.
