Mount Mayon is famous for its naturally perfect cone, which is so stunningly beautiful that no kind soul will ever tire of gazing upon it. In fact, Albay province takes great pride in having it.

Last April 2022, together with other travel bloggers, we visited Sumlang lake, a man-made lake in Brgy. Sumlang, Camalig, Albay. The place is also known as a habitat for diverse flora and fauna and feeding grounds for migratory and resident birds.

Over the past few years, there have been carabaos who would swim and bathe here amidst an abundance of water lilies. But now, it cannot deny that it has been upgraded and is regarded as a new tourist attraction in Albay, where you can enjoy the view of the majestic Mount Mayon.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the Lake is in the morning or late afternoon to avoid sunburns and witness the lake’s magnificent sunset. If you planning to visit, you must ensure that the weather is favourable and avoid the rainy seasons in order to capture the beautiful scenery here.

What To Expect In Sumlang Lake

The place offers a calm and relaxing atmosphere with an amazing view of the Mayon Volcano. Although swimming isn’t allowed here because of the murky water, there are various activities you can try in this ig-worthy destination.

Enjoy a relaxing ride on a balsa or bamboo raft while admiring the stunning scenery of the Mt. Mayon

One of the best activities to do here in Sumlang Lake is rent a bamboo raft. Chairs are also available here, where you can take a photo since the Mayon Volcano is behind your back!

You can watch a cooking demonstration of pinangat and try to taste it; it’s a popular Bicolano dish. Moreover, you can also witness how strips of abaca are prepared by the locals.

Make sure to try eating at their indoor restaurant Socorro’s Lakeside Restaurant and Grille. They offer local delicacies including Bicol express and pinangat. Trying out their camote pie with cheese is a must!

How To Go In Sumlang Lake

From Legazpi

Take a jeepney bound for either Camalig, Guinobatan, or Polangui. Simply observe the signboards. Wait for the jeepney in Penarada Park or Old Albay Park. Legazpi City is only thirty minutes away from Camalig. Inform the driver that you wish to visit Sumlang Lake, and have him drop you off at Albay Agri Ethno Eco Village.

From Manila

Ride a bus bound for Legaspi and tell the driver to get you off at Albay Agri Ethno Eco Village.
