Disney+ ‘American Born Chinese’ Gets a Release Date
Today, Disney+ announced that “American Born Chinese,” a genre-hopping action-comedy from Disney Branded Television and produced by 20th Television, will premiere on May 24.
Based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name, “American Born Chinese” tells the tale of Jin Wang, an average high school student who must balance his social life with his responsibilities at home. Even more, worlds collide when he encounters a new international student on the first day of school, and Jin becomes unwittingly entangled in a battle between Chinese mythological gods.
Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, winners of an Academy® Award & a Golden Globe for “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,” Ben Wang, nominated for an International Emmy twice for “Chang Can Dunk,” Chin Han, set for “Mortal Kombat,” Daniel Wu, nominated for “Reminiscence,” former Taekwondo champion Jimmy Liu, and Sydney Taylor, all-star in the coming-of-age story (“Just Add Magic”). Stephanie Hsu, nominated for an Academy Award for “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,” plays a guest role.
Kelvin Yu, a writer and producer who has won an Award for his work on “Bob’s Burgers” and “Central Park,” is the executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (“Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Short Term 12”) is set to direct and serve as an executive producer, along with Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (“Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” and “Jumanji: The Next Level”), Erin O’Malley (“Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.
