Netflix’s Black Knight Cast Talks About The Desertified Seoul to Charismatic Heroes

Based on the webtoon series “Black Knight” by Lee Yoon-kyun, director Choi Ui-seok of “Cold Eyes” (2013) and “Master” (2016) . The setting of “Black Knight” is the Korean peninsula, which has plagued by poisonous air pollution. A merciless social hierarchy has emerged in this desolate landscape, dividing the city into four districts: the Refugee District, General District, Special District, and Core District.
A thrilling story unfolds against this backdrop, revolving around deliverymen tasked with delivering oxygen and supplies in order to survive. Throughout the day, they serve as lifelines for the populace, ensuring their survival.
As night falls, however, they transform into so-called black knights also serve as nighttime security guards, a group determined to challenge the unjust system and aid the refugees. The series examines their unrelenting efforts to overthrow the social order and restore justice to a society ravaged by deprivation and injustice.

Reasons Why You Should Watch Black Knight
Director Cho revealed that by the time he read the original webtoon, he really like how the universe that was built and the existence of hunters that delivery man have to fight the deliver the daily necessities.
He said, “I love that setup of the storyline. I spoke to the original creator and we actually adapted quite a lot of it for screenplay and original writer was very opened to that happening and thankfully we was able to create the show.”
Cho stated that the production of the six-episode dystopian drama required as much energy as if he were creating two films.
“Each episode has a concrete storyline with an introduction, development, turn, and conclusion. Action scenes are also entertaining,” Cho shared to the media, adding that he requested that Kang You-seok, who plays the refugee Yoon Sa-wol, become a “action monster.”
Visually Enticing and charismatic ensemble cast
Kim Woo-bin as 5-8
Kim Woo-bin plays 5-8, the hardest deliveryman who is admired by many, in the film Black Knight. With his good looks and charisma, Woo Bin flawlessly embodies the hero’s spirit.
Director Cho praised him, stating, “Woo-bin was made for the strong and silent 5-8.” The actor stated at the press conference that he attempted to comprehend 5-8’s past as a refugee and lone character.
The actor admitted that he when he read the script he thought maybe this could be something probable future. He said, “I was became curious and I wanna read more about it. and there’s also a lot of great character and I wanna know more about them”
“Until recently, we were all required to wear masks (due to the pandemic),” Kim Woo Bin stated at a press conference in Yeoungpyeong-gu, Seoul. “I became curious about how people may have to rely heavily on the delivery of oxygen in the future.”
Kim Woo Bin also shared that he also have experienced working with Director Cho before and he remembered it was extremely great. He admitted that he had full trust to the director that why I was drawn into it. “Working on ‘Master’ with director Cho was such a fun experience, and I had a great deal of faith in him, so I decided to participate in this project as well,” Woo Bin explained.
Song Seung-heon as Ryu Seok
Famous actor Song Seung-Heon, known for his roles in Voice Season 4: Judgment Hour, Player, and Black, portrays Ryu Seok, the ruthless successor to the powerful Cheonmyeong Group. In a recent interview, Song revealed that the captivating narrative prompted him to return to acting after a lengthy absence. Still, his trust in Director Cho Ui-seok was his primary motivation.
Cheonmyeong Group heir Ryu Seok because “I wanted to see him use his handsome face to portray the evil acts that his character commits.” Seung Heon wanted to add a layer of loneliness and pity to this role, but on set he is apparently the life of the party!
Woo Bin shared that his co-star Seung Heon actually jokes around a lot. “He tried to ease the atmosphere on set”. Seung Heon also has a really good sense of humor, Esom added. “He would keep joking around on set. It’s not the type of joke that you think is hilarious upfront, but later on you think about it and you realize it’s really funny.”
Seung Heon admitted that his co-stars revelations amusing, “A lot of people tell me this, that I am humorous on set. I am not that humorous, or I don’t joke around too much. But it’s because I have the image of a very stoic kind of character, that’s why people think if I make a little joke they think it’s really funny.”
Seong Heon also shared that he loves to take selfies on set. He stated, “When I’m done with a project or when I’m woking on project, sometimes we wanna upload things on our Instagram and if I dont have photos ready, I dont feel good so when I working on a project I try to take as many photos as possible because i wanna savor the moment. “
When the host asked them to demonstrate, Esom went up first. “So he would always hold the cellphone like this, and we would pose for the camera.” Woo Bin added, “Yes, out of nowhere, Seung Heon would just hold his phone up, and we would get into poses,”.
Esom as Seol-ah
In Black Knight, Esom portrays Major Seol-ah, who has recently received international acclaim for her roles in the Netflix series Kill Boksoon. Her character struggles to maintain social order while harbouring a strong desire to assist the refugee
Esom stated her excitement for the action-packed role, “I have a lot of action scenes & use guns frequently. I hope people will believe I’m a competent soldier!” she said.
She continued, “In the beginning, I trained for my action scenes.” Together with Yoo Seok, she reavealed that she workout at the stunt academy.
However, Director Choi don’t think she need to work much further on that. Esom replied laughingly teased him,“I put a lot of time & effort into preparing for my action scenes. I have a lot of gun work and action scenes in this drama. I’d like to be perceived as someone who can manage how to use a gun.”.
Kang You-seok as Sa-wol
Kang You-seok portrays Yoon Sa-wol, an exile aspiring to become a deliveryman. He disclosed at the press conference that he attempted to match his character’s energy. The director praised Kang’s professionalism, observing his playfulness off-camera but unwavering concentration when the cameras rolled.
When Woo Bin and Esom were asked by the press members how they felt to be reunited since both work as fashion models and now as an actor and actresses.
Esom shared that when she found out Woo Bin would be a part of this project, she was thrilled and eager to work with him again. She stated,” When we were shooting our very 1st scene together, we had oxygen masks on & we would just look in each others’ eyes. And I could feel that energy coming from his eyes, so I thought he was such a good actor.”
Woo Bin expressed that he was thrilled to see her once more. “The first scene is always the most pressure, but because my previous work ended a little later.”
He added that after discussing the past with Som, he felt that they survived in this industry, “We debuted together as models, and we struggled, and the directors would scold us for our performance, but now we’ve grown as a solid actor, so I’m very happy.”
Director Cho also ensured that when you watch the series, you’ll know that it’s different from mad max; there are some scenes that might remind you of mad max, but the narrative is different.
He added, “The changes from the webtoon, compared to the original webtoon is the the worldview. It’s the same, its identical but the differences from the webtoon is that there’s a lot of character, so I try to pull down those characters and there are also new characters added. Well, I talk to the creator of the webtoon and she said feel free to change the webtoon so i have the freedom”
In Korea, there’s a quiet few dystopian world movie. When press members, asked Director Cho, “Why do you think black knight stand out from those similar genres and how do you think people can relate to the show”.
Director Cho answered ,“As you said, there’s other Netflix shows and films. i think we stand out because we are more entertaining. I think our series has a lot of elements of entertainment, different emotion and its packed with action, the character has a different charms so I think people will love it”.
A unique take on the ‘deliverymen’ we’re used to.
In this inventive alternative universe, deliverymen take centre stage as heroes, delivering oxygen during the day and battling evildoers to uphold justice at night. The inventive storyline captivates audiences by starkly contrasting our common perceptions of deliverymen. Even intense competition to become a deliveryman is depicted in Black Knight, a far departure from the role as we know it today.
During the press conference, the main actress, Esom, expressed her fascination with the concept, stating, “It’s amazing how deliverymen, who we’re so familiar with, become special beings responsible for humanity’s survival.”

In a dystopian world, the omnipotent Cheonmyeong Group has imposed an order on a desolate land where only a handful of people have managed to survive. Refugees are marginalized because they lack the necessary QR codes for social security.
This riveting series is crammed with action-packed scenes, such as car chases between refugees and deliverymen, intense deliveryman recruitment battles, and battles between soldiers. Do not miss the electrifying action scenes, which Woo-bin praised, stating that he was “amazed by the actors’ dedication and charisma.”
Desertified Seoul
The series depicts a highly realistic dystopian version of Metropolitan Seoul in which only a few recognizable landmarks, such as structures, remain. The director recalls, “The actors had to act against a blue screen, and CGI did an incredible job with the special effects to make this all possible.” Meanwhile, Song shared with the press that “participating in this series made me think a great deal about the environment and allowed me to appreciate how precious oxygen is!”
