Singer Peabo Bryson is making three stops in his Philippines concert tour 2023
Ovation Productions reintroduces Peabo Bryson, a leading adult contemporary balladeer, to the Philippines. The two-time GRAMMY winner and recipient of the Living Legend Trumpet Award will kick off his Philippine concert tour 2023 on July 19 at the New Frontier Theater in Manila, on July 21 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu, and on July 23 at SMX Convention Center in Davao City.
About Peabo Bryson
Richard Peacock Bryson has established himself as one of the most prominent male vocalists in contemporary music over the course of the last quarter century. Bryson’s first break occurred during a recording session at Bullet/Bang Records in Atlanta. Eddie Biscoe, the label’s general manager at the time, took note of the adolescent singer. Bryson was encouraged to perform his own compositions after Biscoe signed him to a contract as a songwriter, producer, and arranger. Bryson worked with local musicians and produced Bang for a number of years. “Peabo” was his debut album, published in 1976. The project featured Peabo composing nearly all of the songs (some with the legendary Thom Bell), a young Luther Vandross among the background vocalists, and sultry black film diva Tamara “Cleopatra Jones” Dobson expressing her affection for him on the back jacket.
In 1978, Bryson transferred to Capitol Records, where his album “Reaching for the Sky” was certified gold and the title track reached number six on the R&B charts. The title tracks “Feel the Fire” and “I’m So Into You” from his 1978 gold-certified album Crosswinds, “Feel the Fire” and “I’m So Into You,” respectively, won the hearts of soul fans everywhere. “I’m So Into You” spent two weeks as the nation’s number one R&B success.
He collaborated with Capitol labelmate Natalie Cole on “We’re the Best of Friends” in 1979 and with Roberta Flack on “Live & More” (on Atlantic Records) the following year. Peabo released four more albums for Capitol before recording a second, even more successful album with Roberta Flack titled “Born to Love,” which was certified gold and included the hit single “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” (Top 5 R&B and #5 Pop). This prompted him to sign a four-album contract with Elektra Records, the second of which, “Take No Prisoners”, featured the crossover hit “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again” (Top 10 Pop and Top 10 R&B).
Jon Pareles, a music critic from the New York Times, referred to Bryson as the “Pavarotti of soul singers.” His duets with Natalie Cole — “What You Won’t Do for Love” — and Roberta Flack — “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,” a Top 15 pop hit — earned him the title “King of Balladeers.” With the crossover smash “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again,” which peaked at No. 10 on the pop charts, he solidified his mainstream audience. Both “Tonight” and “If” topped the adult contemporary listings at No. 1.
A return to Capitol in 1989 for the album “All My Love” earned him his first R&B number-one single with a rendition of the late Al Wilson’s “Show & Tell” (a song he proudly performs live). He reached the top of the R&B charts for the second time with “Can You Stop The Rain,” the title track of the first of two chart-topping albums for Columbia Records. The single earned Bryson a 1991 Grammy nomination for best male R&B vocal performance, while “Lost in the Night” earned him a nomination in 1992.
As evidence of his acting abilities, he played the lead in a touring production of the Tony Award-winning “Raisin” (based on “Raisin In The Sun”) and The Wizard in a touring production of “The Wiz.” In 1998, he performed in the 100th-anniversary production of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” at the Michigan Opera Theater and recorded two songs for the “Barney” movie soundtrack, one of which, the Bryson-produced “DREAMS,” became the album’s main track. In addition, he released a staggering three Christmas CDs replete with music he has performed for years in his annual touring Christmas music extravaganza, “The Colors of Christmas.”
Late in 2005, Peabo released “Live in Concert: Ladies’ Request” in collaboration with Time-Life, for whom he serves as a spokesperson for their soul retrospective collection. It has sold over three million music copies to date. “Live In Concert” is an beautiful collection that includes many of Peabo’s greatest hits and demonstrates that his voice is as strong and smooth as ever. In early 2006, he released “The Very Best of Peabo Bryson,” a compilation of his greatest songs released on various record labels.
