The iKON fandom, widely known as iKONICs, has raised a significant issue involving the newly debuted girl group KATSEYE, managed by Geffen Records and HYBE. The controversy revolves around the group’s fandom name, EYEKONS, which bears a striking resemblance to iKON’s name. This similarity has sparked protests among iKONICs, who are now calling for a change.

The Backstory

iKON, originally part of YG Entertainment and now signed under 143 Entertainment, has a dedicated global fanbase. Recently, iKONICs have been expressing their dissatisfaction over KATSEYE‘s fandom name, EYEKONS, which they believe is too similar to iKON’s name.

Since April, fans have been voicing their concerns on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and through emails to HYBE and Geffen Records. Despite their efforts, there has been no response from the companies involved.

Fan Reaction

The issue escalated when KATSEYE members reportedly made comments that seemed to mock iKON and their fans. These remarks, shared on the fan community platform Weverse, have added fuel to the fire.

iKONICs argue that the use of the name EYEKONS, which sounds and is written similarly to iKON in both Korean and Japanese, is confusing and disrespectful.

A Call for Change

In response to the perceived inaction from HYBE and Geffen Records, iKONICs have launched an online petition to change KATSEYE’s fandom name. The petition, available here, aims to gather enough signatures to compel the companies to address the issue. The fans plan to submit the petition to HYBE, Geffen Records, and 143 Entertainment, hoping for a swift resolution.

Past Precedents

The iKONICs point out that similar issues have been resolved promptly in the past. For instance, when HYBE’s idol ILLIT faced a similar issue with NMIXX and BLACKPINK’s Lisa, the company acted quickly to rectify the situation. Furthermore, Geffen Records recently apologized for discriminatory remarks made towards BTS member Jimin, indicating their capability to address such matters.

Despite the ongoing protests and efforts to raise awareness, the fandom feel that the issue has not gained enough traction within the broader K-pop community. However, iKONICs are determined to protect the identity and legacy of iKON, urging the public and fellow fans to support their petition and advocacy.
