Sid Lucero and Beauty Gonzales Lead Netflix PH’s First Zombie Feature ‘Outside’
It is impossible to keep what is already within. The trailer for Outside, the first zombie film on Netflix Philippines, ends with this menacing statement. Carlo Ledesma, a renowned TV commercial and content director, promises an intense psychological horror experience when the film opens on October 17.
The narrative centers on a family of four, headed by Francis (Sid Lucero), the family’s troubled patriarch. They flee to Francis’s remote farmhouse in the province with his wife Iris (Beauty Gonzales) and kids Josh (Marco Masa) and Lucas (Aiden Tyler Patdu) in order to find safety and bring some form of normalcy back in the face of a terrible zombie outbreak.
The trailer begins with a shot of a dilapidated car with a bloody fingerprint on the window, graphically representing the family’s difficult journey. After that, there are images of the family trying to adjust to their new home, as well as hints of Francis’s developing paranoia. The trailer foreshadows the family’s impending psychological and emotional challenges, which heightens the suspense.
Outside is more than just a zombie movie, director Carlo stressed in a speech at the Netflix APAC Southeast Asia Showcase in Indonesia in June. According to him, it’s a “terrifying psychological thriller” that centers on a family’s tribulations during a zombie outbreak. “It’s really a movie about a family’s struggle to survive,” he continues.
With his found-footage feature debut The Tunnel in 2011, Carlo made his breakthrough in the horror genre. In 2019, he followed up with Sunod, a horror-comedy short, and The Kapre. According to Carlo, Outside is his most personal creation to date. Carlo drew inspiration for the movie from his childhood in Negros and his personal experience of loneliness during the epidemic.
This October, Outside is set to shock audiences with its terrifying story of surviving in a hopeless world where there are more than just zombies. Along with Sid Lucero, Beauty Gonzales, Marco Masa, and Aiden Patdu, Enchong Dee and Joel Torre have prominent roles in the movie.
Netflix will exclusively release it on October 17 for global premieres.
