Korean Cultural Center Opens “Lights of Korea: Jinju Silk Lanterns” Exhibit in Manila

The Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (KCC), in partnership with the Jinju City Government, has opened a new exhibit titled “Lights of Korea: Jinju Silk Lanterns.” The exhibit runs from May 24 to July 31, 2025, at the KCC exhibition hall in Taguig.
This exhibit is part of the 2025 Touring K-Arts Program, organized by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange. It marks the first time the Jinju Silk Lanterns are being showcased in a solo exhibit in the Philippines.

The lanterns on display come from Jinju, a city in Gyeongsangnam-do Province known for its silk-making history. Each lantern is made of Korean silk, shaped by hand and lit from within. What started as simple festival decorations in Jinju has become a recognized craft that highlights both tradition and design.
Visitors to the exhibit can also take part in a hands-on experience. A DIY Lantern Making Kit is available for those who want to create their own lantern and bring it home as a souvenir. KCC is also hosting “Hanbok Fridays,” where guests can try on traditional Korean clothing, and guided tours are available for those who want to learn more about the history and meaning behind the lanterns.
Beyond their design, the lanterns reflect a story of tradition and cultural identity. The exhibit aims to share this story with a wider audience and strengthen the connection between Korea and the Philippines.
After its Manila run, the “Lights of Korea: Jinju Silk Lanterns” exhibit will travel to Indonesia and Vietnam as part of its Southeast Asian tour.

KCC encourages the public to visit and explore the exhibit, which offers a closer look at Korean craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
