Upcoming Korean Dramas on Netflix That Will Make Your Heart Beat Faster
If you were swept away by the unconventional love story in Crash Landing on You or melted by the first stirrings of connection in Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Business Proposal, get ready for an announcement that will make your heart beat faster.
The increasing popularity of K-Romance among audiences worldwide shows no sign of fading. The global viewership of Netflix’s K-Romance titles quadrupled between 2018 and 2022. In 2022 alone, more than 90 percent of these views originated from countries other than South Korea.
We’re moved by the affection, and we’re eager to return it in kind. Netflix, the home of compelling K-Romance, will introduce six new Korean romance series within the next five months.
Don Kang, Vice President of Content (Korea), notes that this genre has captivated audiences in Korea and throughout Asia for decades, a testimony to the storytelling prowess and production expertise of talented Korean content creators.
“We are authentically humbled by how our emotionally-charged Korean shows have found a home in the hearts of global audiences via Netflix, from the United States to Europe to South America and beyond. Our stories touch upon the universal aspects of life, such as love, sorrow, and tenderness, while also offering a glimpse into the distinctive aspects of Korean culture. We are ecstatic about Netflix’s dedication to establishing this profound global connection.”
Wooyeon Yang, Director of Content (Korea), adds, “Creators have dedicated themselves to painting the delicate dynamics and evolving emotions of our characters.” She believes that the slow-burning intensity and wholesome appeal of K-romances create an unquestionably “lovable genre that resonates with global audiences.”
Netflix’s investments in subtitling and rendering have been crucial to expanding the K-Romance audience. “The impact has been more profound than we ever could have imagined,” Yang explains. “Despite the diversity of languages, the common thread of understanding and accessing Korean content seems to be a key strength that has established Netflix as a trendsetter.”
Yang emphasizes the importance of rendering, stating that “listening to dialogues in their native tongues helps K-Romance resonate more strongly with international audiences.”
